Come on already.

Dear Winter,

If you insist on being so cold, can’t you at least make it snow?

All these images were shot by Joseph O. Holmes in the lovely Prospect Park. Wouldn’t you ladies be up for a snow day where we get bundled up, throw some snowballs, then make it back home for a boozy afternoon of chatting and sitting by the fire?

Hello 2012, I’m happy to see you!

Dearest pals,

Can you believe it? Another year has come and gone….

I’m not one for making or keeping resolutions but this year I really want to push myself to do LOTS of fun things in this amazing city. Here’s what I propose, will you join me? -

Enjoying the outdoors -

Last year I didn’t do the Philharmonic in the park (because they skipped last year), I didn’t go to any outdoor movies and barely made it to Prospect Park! There’s so many lovely outdoor options (most that are free) during the Spring, Summer and Fall, this year, you’ll have to stop me from sleeping on park benches (too much?)

Doing the touristy stuff

Us jaded New Yorkers take for granted all the activities that are considered tourist attractions. Yes, they’re full of camera and backpack toting families but how about we play hooky from work and explore some of these options on less crowded days? The above are photos I took during my trip to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. It was so relaxing and lovely and since we did it on a Monday getting around was a breeze.

Getting lost…

Too often we’re rushing around to get from point A to point B. What about leaving the house and just wandering around with no schedule or final destination in mind? During the Fall I took a long walk and made my way to the Columbia Street waterfront in Brooklyn. I saw the above bakery and promised myself I would make it back….except that I forgot to write down the name of the bakery…eek…so maybe on one of our adventures we can search for it again?

Happy New Year!

Gift Guide – New Girl Crush

S! I love those!

Speaking of flea market finds, this book would make a great gift for your new girl crush. It says “I’m design inclined yet laid back – and I think you are too! Let’s be BFF’s” ;)

10 years

What’s the best thing to do on the 10th anniversary of September 11th? Love up on this city and make sure it knows you’re with it during good times and especially during bad times. Chris and I visited the Brooklyn Bridge park, ate some tacos and laid on the grass enjoying the view of this still great city…

A wee little lady liberty…

Happy Birthday pal-i-o!

Happy Birthday to Jess! What an exciting year you have ahead of you.

What are you going to do to celebrate this year? Some delicious food? A mani-pedi? Maybe try one of these delish non-alcoholic bevvys since you’re knocked up…

A Cherry Bomb

Or maybe A Pink Grapefruit Margarita

Whatever you decide to do I hope it’s a charmed and happy day!

Richard Serra Drawing at The Met

M -

You know, I’m no artist. But I’m married to one and it’s very difficult being around the Mr. and getting to experience art for art’s sake. He’s just a wealth of knowledge and sometimes because of his influence, I forget to simply look. But this weekend we went to The Met to see the Richard Serra Drawing retrospective. We all know his sculptural work – metal you can interact with. I’ve never found his work cold, regardless of the medium or the size. I always find the work fun-loving and awe-inspiring at the same time.

This exhibit won’t disappoint. Even when using only black paintstick on handmade paper you find yourself totally transported to a calm and meditative space – I could have stayed in those galleries for hours (if it weren’t for the baby boy living on my bladder). He used the paintstick so liberally, it looks like cake frosting, I really wanted to eat it…or smear it around more. Definitely play with it…that’s for sure. I’m quite certain it’s not even dried yet. There are two final pieces made specifically for this installation.

I love NY and I love when I remember to take advantage of it ;)

Flavor Paper

Ready to feel some job envy? This place is right down the street from our apartment and is quite possibly the coolest work space I’ve ever seen …

Flavor Paper is a handscreened wallpaper company that was started by a man named Ted on the coast of Oregon. Many years later a team of designers, looking for some wallcoverings, discovered Ted’s designs and equipment. They were able to save them from destruction and took the operation with them to New Olreans. Many years and a devastating storm later, Flavor Paper  is now housed in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn.

A few reasons why I love this place -

1) Their studio and workspace look so fun I want to work there even though I have no idea what any of that equipment does

2) They make me want to redo my entire apartment with their wall coverings
3) They use water based inks or eco-solvents to be as green as possible

4) They call their Brooklyn space the Flavor Lair
5) They offer tours of their offices and studio!!
When shall we go??

If you’re going to San Francisco…

Farewell to our friends Cia and Jamie, as they make their way to the west coast…

your going away party in Prospect Park was just perfect…

Upstate

Hello J,

How did you spend your weekend? The husband and I joined Cia and Jamie upstate for a going away BBQ.

It was a perfectly mellow weekend…

On Sunday we made it to Jack’s, which is a burger and hot dog joint that’s been around for a long time. Who wouldn’t love a place like this on 4th of July weekend?

(fun fact, the husbands dad went there for his 30th birthday and Chris continued that tradition by going there on his 30th birthday)

Then we took a train home and I was just loving the Hudson River at sunset…

Espadrilles

Friends,

It’s already a steamy Summer. Usually, flip flops are my go to for everyday walking around shoes but this year, after a trip to the Catalan coast, I’m wearing these lovelies around…

I always knew espadrilles were a traditional Spanish shoe but I did a little research and discovered the word is derived from espart, a Catalan name for esparto, a Mediterranean grass used in making rope (the bottom layer of the shoe). Espadrilles have been made in Catalonia since the 14th century…fun! I picked up 2 pairs for myself and one for Cia as a (tear) going away gift…
