Come on already.

Dear Winter,

If you insist on being so cold, can’t you at least make it snow?

All these images were shot by Joseph O. Holmes in the lovely Prospect Park. Wouldn’t you ladies be up for a snow day where we get bundled up, throw some snowballs, then make it back home for a boozy afternoon of chatting and sitting by the fire?

Happy 2012 lovelies!

Happy happy my dears. Reflecting back, 2011 was a pretty good year but I do think that like the end of anything and beginning of something else it’s a good time to pause and reflect.

I personally haven’t made New Year’s resolutions in years mostly because I hate disappointment. I also may have created crazy laundry lists in the past of slightly un-achievable goals instead of creating a fun checklist of sorts like you did, M.

So here’s my list of intentions for 2012. I’m game to join you on some of your adventures if you’ll keep me honest with my list.

Sampling grilled corn

Last summer Tom and I finally sampled the infamous Red Hook Food Vendors, and strolled around Sheepshead Bay, Rockaway Beach, the New York Botanical Garden and Long Island City but I’m embarrassed to confess we didn’t get to Prospect Park much at all!

This past weekend we checked out a restaurant recommendation from a friend in Flushing called Nan Shian (or Nan Xiang depending on who you talk to) that specializes in deliciously succulent soup dumplings. Local spots like this are definitely worth exploring, don’t ya think?

M, we will have to hunt down that bakery you stumbled upon. If you have the picture on your iPhone and upload to Instagram it may recognize it if you have your geotag settings enabled. Can we also make a pie date and visit Four and Twenty Blackbirds? I have heard the best things and keep meaning to go there to sample their confections in person.

Cook out of the box

I’m looking for any and all inspiration of new dishes to prepare versus my old routine. Of course, in theme with New Year comes the flood of detox food and juice recommendations. Recent posts from Bon Appetit and The Kitchn sparked my attention. This week’s been off to a good start but I hope to keep up the momentum.

Sweat more

I enjoy eating and drinking a plenty so I figure it’s fair to try keep a balance with a little detox and re-tox action. S joined me for a little Zumba last night and we have a yoga date Friday night. Not a bad way to kick off the year.

Hello 2012, I’m happy to see you!

Dearest pals,

Can you believe it? Another year has come and gone….

I’m not one for making or keeping resolutions but this year I really want to push myself to do LOTS of fun things in this amazing city. Here’s what I propose, will you join me? -

Enjoying the outdoors -

Last year I didn’t do the Philharmonic in the park (because they skipped last year), I didn’t go to any outdoor movies and barely made it to Prospect Park! There’s so many lovely outdoor options (most that are free) during the Spring, Summer and Fall, this year, you’ll have to stop me from sleeping on park benches (too much?)

Doing the touristy stuff

Us jaded New Yorkers take for granted all the activities that are considered tourist attractions. Yes, they’re full of camera and backpack toting families but how about we play hooky from work and explore some of these options on less crowded days? The above are photos I took during my trip to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. It was so relaxing and lovely and since we did it on a Monday getting around was a breeze.

Getting lost…

Too often we’re rushing around to get from point A to point B. What about leaving the house and just wandering around with no schedule or final destination in mind? During the Fall I took a long walk and made my way to the Columbia Street waterfront in Brooklyn. I saw the above bakery and promised myself I would make it back….except that I forgot to write down the name of the bakery…eek…so maybe on one of our adventures we can search for it again?

Happy New Year!

The Brooklyn Flea

Another month of the Brooklyn Flea outdoors and then it’s to 1 Hanson Place! You’ll always find a treasure at the Flea. I love the mix of found objects and locally made goodies. A few favorites…

A lovely clog

Creepy, cozy offerings from Hunters and Gatherers…

Some locally made benches…

Some shades…

A piece of furniture with a story to tell…

Rhinebeck

You know what’s great? When your friend’s godmother has a picturesque farm in Rhinebeck, New York and she invites you to spend time there on a perfect Fall weekend…

Did I mention there were miniature horses?

And Bassett hounds?

And chickens that gave us eggs for breakfast the next morning?

It was such a treat, made me wish for my very own country home…..I have to start saving my pennies

10 years

What’s the best thing to do on the 10th anniversary of September 11th? Love up on this city and make sure it knows you’re with it during good times and especially during bad times. Chris and I visited the Brooklyn Bridge park, ate some tacos and laid on the grass enjoying the view of this still great city…

A wee little lady liberty…

Dia:Beacon

I have a confession to make – I can’t remember the last time I went to a museum or gallery. This is especially embarrassing because I was a visual arts major with your Mr. and he’s putting me to shame….I do remember one of my favorite trips to a museum, and it just so happens it was with you guys and the husband and we saw Richard Serra pieces! Remember our fun trip to  The Dia:Beacon last fall?

Perhaps the next time we visit we should stay at this this lovely B&B…It’s cute and totally spooky!

The Mets

Nothing says Summer like a baseball game on a hot July night. Mets vs. Cardinals. I ate a hot dog, fries, fried dough, the Mets won and a crazed fan got on the field and ran around for a solid minute before he was caught! I think I’m officially a Mets fan..

Upstate

Hello J,

How did you spend your weekend? The husband and I joined Cia and Jamie upstate for a going away BBQ.

It was a perfectly mellow weekend…

On Sunday we made it to Jack’s, which is a burger and hot dog joint that’s been around for a long time. Who wouldn’t love a place like this on 4th of July weekend?

(fun fact, the husbands dad went there for his 30th birthday and Chris continued that tradition by going there on his 30th birthday)

Then we took a train home and I was just loving the Hudson River at sunset…

xxo, M

Quick hello

I promise a lengthy post before the weekend, but for now, a lovely picture Cia took while on the train to Albany…
