Come on already.

Dear Winter,

If you insist on being so cold, can’t you at least make it snow?

All these images were shot by Joseph O. Holmes in the lovely Prospect Park. Wouldn’t you ladies be up for a snow day where we get bundled up, throw some snowballs, then make it back home for a boozy afternoon of chatting and sitting by the fire?

Gift Guide – Unlucky in Love Brother

We all have the one.  The one on your holiday list that you just can’t get excited about shopping for this year.  He may not be in the merriest of spirits: whether it’s your brother who has had a lean year in the lady department, or a brother-in-law you hardly know, or even your best guy friend who is feeling a little low, this dude could use a laugh! Most certainly, a chick will make him crack a smile. And a flock of chicks? He would be indebted to you forever!  And indebted to him would be the family that receives this charitable gift of the actual feathered friends through Heifer International, whose eggs will help feed them for years to come. In one fell swoop, you have turned this lazy man into a philanthropic idol and aided the world’s hunger crisis. I think we have a winner!

New York Public Library

Isn’t today the perfect day for sitting in a big (kinda spooky) library reading dusty books? Since I can’t make it to the New York Public Library I’ll do the next best thing -  search the digital library from my cozy office. They just added over 700,000 images from their collection so I put random words in the search field and got some pretty funzy results….

Guess what

Can you guess what this is? It’s a column in the 14th St. subway station. Look how deep those layers of paint go!

Makes me feel nutty thinking about how much those columns have seen…..

I wish I was gutsy enough to explore forgotten subway stations that exist below us. Making my way through these buried beauties, spelunking through damp, dark caves, maybe chatting it up with some mole people. Can you imagine?

Photo by Steve Duncan from NPR

The City Hall subway station is a favorite among “urban explorers”. It was built in 1904 and closed in 1945 because a little under 606 people used it on a daily basis. If you stay on the 6 train until the end of the line, as it loops to go back uptown, you can see the station for yourself …

With Halloween right around the corner maybe we should dust off our headband lights and plan a costume party in one of these old stations….who’s with me?

Tree Houses

Jess,

How could I forget about Dumont? Maybe because cheap white wine at Fanelli’s made me a little loopy?

Anyways, can we please go and eat in the tree house? I always envied the kids with tree houses in their backyards, no such luck with my overly protective parents. Check out these awesome ones…

According to this blog, artist Melinda Hackett built a treehouse for her daughters in her small Brooklyn backyard and a neighbor reported it to the city. Hackett had to fight to keep the treehouse in her yard, I mean…get a life neighbor.

Look at this dreamy one…

And a grown up version…

All this tree house talk reminds me of these amazing Waldorf Fairy Houses I saw at Acorn in Brooklyn. Sure it’s a kid’s store but I’m totally coveting these works of art –

They’re one of a kind and I’m geeking out over details like a front gate…

A fairy hammock…

And a bird’s nest, gah, I love them!…

Fanelli’s

Hey pals,

Can you believe it’s already Summer? Spring made a very brief appearance but left some lovely things behind…

Friday night, after a loooong week I went with a couple of colleagues to get a drink at Fanelli’s Cafe in Soho.

I love the penny hex tile floors…

Did you ever notice it’s a boxing bar? I mean, it was once owned by a boxer and all the photos on the walls are of legendary boxers.

It’s been open since the late 1800′s and operated as a speakeasy during the Prohibition. Man, if those walls could talk….

It’s always a good time when I let loose with my work pals but the night was extra fun because of our bartender, Bob. He’s an ex-boxer who acts really put out by any request but then throws you a wink when you least expect it. Apparently he was a big deal in the boxing world back in the day, he even fought Larry Holmes in Madison Square Garden in 1973.

I found a picture of him from his boxing days…

Weekend bag

Ever see a weekend bag that you can plan an entire trip around? It’s almost Summer and I’m getting the travel bug. My trip would consist of a train ride, a chic but slightly run down bungalow and maybe a crystal clear lake. Something like this -

I could go for the classic, refined bag…

A little more sporty

Or something more bohemian, like this Madewell bag

Or visit Love, Adorned for this adorable one!

Amtrak, here I come!

This has nothing to do with NY

but it’s a hoot, nonetheless. (yup, another dad joke).

Yes please

Check out this funky apartment in Red Hook…

Don’t you just love all the brick walls, the exposed beams and the scruffy artist living there?

Thunder only happens when it’s raining

Yes! I completely support your newfound love of Fleetwood Mac. Stevie fascinates me. I love her voice, her vibe is so funky and cool and she played like the male counterparts of her time and didn’t apologize for it…

Come to think of it, their album Rumors is perfect for a gloomy day like today.
